Coco

A week before my grandpa passed away from cancer, he had me drive him around to various places to finalize some business and to say goodbye to people. Although, at the time, I didn’t realize that saying goodbye to people was part of his errands I was going to help him with.

Everywhere we went, he said goodbye to people who had touched his life including: the guy at the golf shop, the post office worker (who was a big burly man), and the bank personnel at two different banks.  All of them had tears in their eyes as they came around the counters and hugged him.

When we left the post office I was very touched at what I had witnessed. I made the comment to him, “Coco (this is the nickname we grandkids had given him) everywhere we have gone people have been so touched by you. They all love you so much.”

He stopped and looked at me and said, “Babycakes, when you are nice to people, people will be nice to you.”

Since his passing I have never forgotten this piece of advice he had given me. I have also realized that his philosophy works in many different areas of life too. If you are supportive of people, people will be supportive of you. Hence, be somebody else’s Pocket Cheerleader.

You must be the significant power behind someone else and in turn
somebody will be the significant power behind you.

Here is an easy plan of action for helping someone else
Encourage other people to be their best.
Cheer them on when things get tough.
Cheer with them when they do well.
Don’t be aggressively pushy. Nobody likes a bully even if you think it’s for their own good.
Be the positive strength in their efforts.

Personally, I would encourage everybody to be someone else’s Pocket Cheerleader. You never know what kind of impact you’re having on them. You may see the results in a month or two or ten years from now. What is important is that you believe in them. Trust me, they will never forget you and you will grow from the experience too.
